And this makes people amusingly mad for some reason.
I remember back when these were new, photos of them with broken tie rods or collapsed suspension would pop up pretty much every week on automotive forums.
But they look cool right?

They are stupid, but I was a little kid when they launched, so I still have a soft spot for them. They’re so stupid it’s kind of endearing to me.
The stereotypical driver, on the other hand... ugh.
Also, the H1 is still bad ass to me.
We don’t speak of the H3.

The H3 is actually decent though, offroad at least. It could be had with a manual and a rear locker. The H2 was complete shit.

Well, I’d never own an H2 or H3, but like I said, the H2 is endearing purely from nostalgia. The only one that I think is a truly good vehicle is the H1. Also, I just hate the styling of the H3. Yes, the H2 is just a brick, but it’s a brick that I kinda like the look of.
In other words, I have no taste and I’m fully aware of it.

I was little when these came out and thought they were awesome purely because big, badass looking truck. Now that I know more, I’d take the smaller H3 without second thought if I wanted a Hummer. Since the H3 was actually a useable size and had some useful off-road stuff.

I remember getting to drive one briefly when I worked at Chevy and oh my god I felt like the king of the road in it. Everything was so plasticy, it was loud as he’ll, terrible to see out of, but my god it let me live a childhood dream

People say that they had potential, which is true but they were poorly executed and ended up being bad at what they were supposedly designed for. That’s basically the definition of stupid. I mourn Hummer for what they could have, should have been.

I will just say that a friend rented one in Hawaii when they were first around and we thrashed it and it was fun. Off road it did great. So there’s that.

I don’t know why everybody puts super heavy bro-truck wheels on those.. It’d be a halfway decent large off roader if not for the wheels and lower profile tires...

The H2 had a rear locker as well as independent suspension with coil springs, air suspension, a unique frame and 35" A/Ts (VS 33" on the H3) and 16 inches of ground clearance (compared to 9.7 on the H3). Sure, the H2 was an overstyled machismo Tonka truck that looked utterly ridiculous, and was bought by equally overly machismo, ridiculous people, but it had the hardware to go off road as well as anything at the time.

Well, the H3 (truck or SUV) Alpha w/Adventure package is actually not bad. Available LH8 5.3, had both front (2008.5-2010) and rear (all years) lockers, and a 4:1 T-case. Essentially a V8 IFS Rubicon.

It only had independent front suspension. It was built on a suburban. Very heavy and big to follow your buddies jeep into the woods...

It wasn’t built on a Suburban, the front frame section was from a HD chassis, the rear section was Tahoe and the middle part was unique to the H2. Yes, it was big and heavy, but it was a full sixe + truck and is about 5" narrower than a modern Raptor, with much more ground clearance and great approach/departure angles. For it’s size, it was good. It’s not going on any Jeep trails, but across the desert it could keep up. Josh Hall drove one in the Baja 1000 to a stock full class victory in 2006.
